God wants to know that your desire for a relationship is not for your glory, but His. He will test and assess your heart. Sometimes He will give you over to the mess of your heart and sometimes He will save you from it. Either may manifest in drastic circumstances, so just be prepared. Just as He gave it all up for you, will you give it all up for Him? Do you love Him more than the world, the people of the world, or yourself?
